My Brain Mapping Results Are In and…… Ummm…. What Was I Talking About?
The last thing I expected the scientist at The Brain Enhancement Institute to say to me when I walked in the door to get the Report of Findings (ROP) from my brain-mapping was “You have a problem with your gut and you need to take care of it.”
“Huh?”
Dr. Cripe then pushed over a file containing the ROP and on the first page was a series of pictures showing my own personal brain functioning. The first 5 slides showed a tremendous amount of over-activity in some part of my brain that was trying to compensate for some inadequacies in said belly. Whoulda thunk? ( Just an FYI, I did go on to have some additional tests taken at my Physician’s office and as it turns out, I did have a chronic condition which is now being treated and this little brain-mapping episode may very well have saved me from years and years of physical discomfort as well as later more long-term debilitating problems.) But, that was just the first of some very telling and interesting discoveries.
As it turns out, they were able to see with this cutting edge technology that some of my Executive Functions are compromised. Same goes for my Memory, Communication, Regulation and Compulsive/Addiction Behavior Indexes. And here all along I thought I had developed (or, as they would say “adapted”) ways of hiding what I considered to be these defects. For instance, they could see I am challenged by planning, impulse control, distractibility and that I have difficulty following directions. That I can be disorganized and forgetful. That I have a compulsive drive that is both genetic and environmental. That I worry and sometimes over-react. That I am very sensitive and will use avoidance behavior under stress. Admittedly, all of the above is true. I know you’re thinking – “wow, what a piece of work!” but the truth is many people are in a similar situation. Whether due to trauma or head injuries or drug and/or alcohol abuse – our brains just aren’t what they once were and life has gotten a little (or a lot) harder. What’s cool though is that I don’t have to live this way forever; and, neither do you. I have spent so much time in my life – especially since I get sober over a decade ago, finding ways to compensate for these “deficiencies”. I take a lot of notes – I write things down (though I don’t always remember to read what I wrote down or even where I wrote it). I hold onto peoples words and take a mental picture of the actual letters in the words so that I will not forget what they said. I set alerts for myself and reminders on my phone so I don’t forget appointments. I try to create patterns and consistencies of actions so that I will remember what I am supposed to do. These things do work, to a point, but it can be exhausting. The added energy it takes to program and remind and fret over can, at times, seem unbearable or even not worth it. I had to laugh out loud when they showed me the score of my IQ under stress. My numbers are so low under stress that it is a wonder I am not extinct. Almost uneducatable. About as smart as a box of hair. And it all made sense when they were going over these statistics with me! How I can completely lose my ability to formulate words sometimes at the end of a high stress day. Like the trigger that pulls the thinking into speaking is broken and there is just a big cloud of white smoke upstairs with not a lot of anything else happening.
I did not feel badly hearing all of this information; rather, I felt relieved. It was as if how I have been feeling all these years was validated – like there is a reason for how I have been feeling and it isn’t just some weakness on my part that cannot be altered. Thank science for remediation! That’s right – there is a way to retrain and rebuild and rework my brain so that it functions at the highest level it is capable of. (They also showed me how high my IQ is currently when not under stress and the level to which it is capable of reaching upon completion of a few months of remediation- dig it).
Upon finishing going over the Report of Findings, the good doctor set me up with a series of exercises to do at ONE80CENTER on the computer which are going to retrain my brain. I am guaranteed that if I do the work, I will get better. My memory will improve, I will be clear thinking again, people and things around me will seem to work better. I will be smart again.
Recovery is such a beautiful and awesome undertaking. It is both courageous and rewarding. I see this opportunity to participate in brain-mapping as an example of what a remarkable time it is to be alive. We can in fact recover our whole selves. That this technology exists and it is available is so promising, it is difficult to contain one’s enthusiasm. I hope that one day every addict or alcoholic is introduced to this. For some, it will be the next level of recovery – for others it will be the first thing that finally made the difference they needed just to stay sober one day at a time.
Brain Mapping – Help, My Brain Isn’t Working Like it Used To!
Help, My Brain Isn’t Working Like it Used To!
Luckily, there is Brain Mapping .
Have you ever gone into a room and forgotten what you went in there for? Or, asked someone their name and then immediately after they responded, forgotten what they said? Have you even maybe thought – “Wow, I didn’t listen to the answer after I asked the question”? Do you start to drift when people are talking, thinking about nothing in particular, just unable to concentrate any longer? Do you feel like you used to be a lot smarter than you are? Well, you are not alone! As we age, of course, there is always that idea that things may slow down a little bit – but who would of thought we would forget what we were saying mid-sentence in our 30′s or 40′s? And, if it gets a bit harder to think as we age anyway, what about those of us who have a history of trauma to the head or drug and alcohol abuse or both? What about us who, while abusing alcohol and/or drugs, got into car accidents or fell from high places, or hit our heads hard enough to crack them, only to find we do not bounce? Our poor brains rattling around inside these helmets like so many snowflakes in a snow globe! In retrospect, the fact that we still have brains should be cause enough for gratitude. But still, we want more. We want to remember things again, to recall names, dates, events, people. We want to do simple tasks like we used – a crossword puzzle, a word game, a concentrated conversation. We want the fog to lift and to be restored to a certain “smartness” we remember having. We want to remember where we put those darn keys! It shouldn’t be too much to ask.
Admittedly, I was a bit dismayed when Dr. Curtis Cripe and Steve Orentstein of The Brain Enhancement Institute told me that “the brain is an organ that doesn’t self heal”. It seemed like all of a sudden, the vitamin supplements, the healthy organic foods, the extra sleep, the exercise, and all of the other tools I have learned along the way to enhance my performance and to simply feel better were, somewhat, for nought. “The good news” Orenstein added “is we can fix it”.
ONE80CENTER has partnered with The Brain Enhancement Institute because we are committed to thinking outside the box of traditional recovery and to utilizing the best available resources in the world. We actively seek out proven techniques and tested cutting edge technology that will help clients at ONE80CENTER and in our community truly heal. We are committed to a wellness that covers all aspects of a person’s life. As it turns out, alcohol abuse and drug addiction is a major contributor to the degradation of the brain. We figure, while supporting our clients in the recovery from drug addiction and alcohol abuse, along with a myriad of other process addictions, we need to address the primary component in all of this – their brains! Brain Mapping is a proven way to do this.
“How does it work?” you ask. Well, it is actually quite simple, for such a complicated organ. And I tell you, just the act of starting the process brings a certain element of hope that wasn’t there before; as if, in taking an action that promises to heal the brain, the brain itself sits up and suits up and says “Bring it on!” You begin to actually feel smarter just for making the decision to retrain your brain. Here is a very simple take on the process:
- You strap on an FQEEG (Functional Quantitative Electroencephalograph) cap that is attached to a computer. There are leads that go from certain parts of your head into the feed
- This technology measures how your brain functions and performs while doing certain tasks (it looks at, among other things, memory, recall, attention, stress level, and integration).
- You get back a very specific report of findings from the expert doctors and scientists who translate the information and develop an individualized treatment plan just for you.
- You start the remediation process ( an hour a day a few days a week for a couple of months or so)
- You get your brain to perform optimally again!
We first got interested in this when we were researching additional technologies and methodologies we could use to help our clients recovery from drug and alcohol abuse. Those of us with addictions can use all the help we can get- so long as it is good, healthy and time-tested help! We were excited to find that Brain Mapping really was helping people to recover – especially addicted individuals who had histories of relapsing or additional psychological problems. We also found out that Brain Mapping had some significant success in helping people get off of medications that were no longer needed and that, in general, brain mapping helped people’s recovery from drug and alcohol abuse a whole lot smoother. We are up for all of that!
The results on Brain Mapping are out. It works. It has been proven. I just got my own Brain Map done yesterday. If the reports aren’t too embarrassing, I will let you know what they found and tell you a bit about the process. It will be interesting to see if my writing gets smarter as we go along
