Mephedrone – “Meow”

Mephedrone or “meow” is a new drug that is rapidly spreading through the streets, clubs, festivals, and parties of the UK. Used as a synthetic stimulant with side effects of hallucinations, it is taken in either a capsule form, snorted, or injected. Although this substance has been legally sold throughout the shops of the UK for the past year, in April of  2010 it was banned by the British government.

With the ban in effect, unrestricted sales of Mephedrone and synthetic substitutes (some even worse than Mephedrone) have started to occur on the internet. The UK government is doing their best to stop these sales.

The ban was pushed through when Mephedrone, being mixed with other controlled substances – was linked to at least 26 teenage deaths in the past year.  Although it has been banned in the UK, Mephedrone is still legal in the USA, except for North Dakota. For the most part it is unheard of within U.S. drug culture. It will be interesting to watch the development of this substance as it finds its way to the youth in the states…
